Solo 'Poco Loco' Baja Motorcycle Adventure
Day-13 Baja Adventure Ride: Rolling again
“Every man can transform the world from one of monotony and drabness to one of excitement and adventure.” – Irving Wallace
Packed up ready to roll to complete this Baja loop. I am happy. The ride is different now, I’m running a tube in the rear tire, I’m not carrying a spare tube, no patch kit and no tire pump. I will be checking out some short side tracks, just no major off-road tracks. The way I carry survival supplies I’m prepared to hike out 50 or 60 miles at any time if necessary, I just don’t want to ask for it, if you know what I mean.
A must stop always! Best homemade HOT salsa in Baja recommended by Tim Morton the Ultimate Baja Authority.
Hottest and the best salsa in Baja!
Catavina. It’s a long days ride on mostly highways today. Riding a small 350cc bike is tough on the bod regardless. Ready to call it quits here and pay the $70 (ouch) for a nice room. Can Do.
A group of three Canadian’s on big adventure bikes roll in. What a fun group, first time in Baja dream ride for decades as they put it. A newer V-Strom, African twin and Triumph adventure bike. They have had a blast.
Later a big group of dirt biker’s braaap in. it’s a moto club based out of Colorado they do a ride in Baja every year. I ask if they know Kevin and Machelle Busch. YES they are members of the group! So cool we all connect, light up the hotel bar telling stories of rides and dreams, so great. One of the dirt biker’s, Andy Wilson tells a story of him out riding solo last week on a dry lake bed and getting severely stuck, it took him over two hours to get unstuck! So stoked telling the story and how he recovered. These people speak my language, loving it. Many new friends made here. The motorcycle adventure riders community rocks!
Day-14: – Ensenada! I’m cutting this ride short by more then a week just because I will not ride to these remote Baja places solo without Mousse tubes or a means to patch a flat tube. All good this has been an awesome ride a dream ride come true. I will get the tire thing straightened out, chain and sprockets (I’ve needed to adjust this chain at least two clicks every day! Almost out of clicks!) and give the body time to rest up. Still have months to explore Baja this season, now I just need another plan. All good ‘Plan, Prepare, Execute, Relive, Repeat’
The morning is cool but everyone is up early ready to ride. I take my time, I still have coffee to drink. The Colorado group is doing the Pacific coast then over to the other side to Gonzaga bay, wow sounds fantastic. I would have joined them if I didn’t fry the Mousse.
I will never get over the beauty of Baja desert, never. I can deal with that…
El Rosario is another good village to stop for street tacos. A loop through town, this looked like the best place. I enjoy practicing Spanish, this is a good spot for that always entertaining.
Ensenada, in a way feels like home already, just without Heidi. I get my favorite $40 room with kitchenet and counter overlooking all the action outside, and just across the street from Empanada Julia’s, perfect. Can’t believe it, my ‘Cavebiker Racing’ sticker is still here almost five years later. An artist did do a little work on my face to make me look more ‘Bad’. I love it!
Day-15 Baja Adventure Ride – What a Ride! “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!” ― Hunter S. Thompson What a Ride! I am fried. I’m walking with a bad limp now, it was a struggle to walk to breakfast this morning and to empanadas last night, but I made it. I developed a big kink in my left knee. I think it’s caused from the weird little hop step I need to perform when I dismount the bike with this stupid duffle bag strapped to the seat. I planned to run the Diablo dry lakebed route home into San Felipe. But then I thought about what if I had problems, I would have to walk 20 miles or more. No walking today for me, I take the cushy highway all the way home to SF instead.
One lucky dude to have Heidi on my side supporting 100% and loving me. The least I can do.
I take it slow heading out of Ensenada waiting for the Ensenada to San Felipe 250 race to go through.
Baja victory lap complete! What a blast. Heidi hears my wheelie run past our house and gets a photo of me coming in, just great!
Happy to be home (our rental home in Baja) Heidi prescribes ice for the knee and an ice drink for me. How did I get so lucky!
